Fireworks Fun

How to play this game

Everybody loves fireworks. The amazing colours, shapes and sounds are exciting to experience. You never know what to expect next. We associate firework displays with special occasions and holidays. In this activity children are encouraged to just have fun clicking on the screen and watching the wonderful colours and designs appear.

On opening the activity the screen is black, like the night sky. Clicking anywhere on the screen will produce a colourful explosion. Clicking in quick succession around the screen will shoot off lots of fireworks together.

To exit, click on the small hand in the lower right corner of the screen.

Teaching tips

This activity has been designed purely with fun in mind. It is quite simple to play, but is beautiful to behold. Children will feel like they are in charge of a magnificent performance and will delight in the varied colours, forms and sounds that come alive before them.

Encourage children to set lots of fireworks off together. As they gain confidence with the game they can set off a number of explosions in one corner of the screen and then more over the other side. Try up high or down low.

They can call out the colours of the fireworks as they explode onto the screen. Ask them about their favourite displays and colours. How they make them feel?

Fireworks were invented in China and were first documented as long ago as the 7th century. Over the years it has been discovered that different chemicals and metals used in fireworks produce different results. For example, iron produces sparks; lithium makes them red, copper makes them blue-green and sodium produces intense yellow colouring. Noise associated with a fireworks display can be describes as a bang, whistle, crackle, whizz and hum. Fireworks displays are usually accompanied by beautifully arranged music to add to the overall effect.
