Counting Fun

How to play this game

Children love to count. With this in mind, we have made a simple counting activity that children will enjoy.

When this activity opens, there are nine buttons at the bottom of the screen, with numbers in sequence from one to nine. There is also a group of items in the main part of the screen. Children will be asked to count the number of items in the group. They can then click on the numbers at the bottom of the screen or press the number keys on their keyboard. If correct, cheering will sound.

To exit, click on the small hand in the lower right corner of the screen.

Teaching tips

The look of the numbers on the screen have been purposely made to resemble the number keys found on a keyboard. Children can choose the numbers on the screen or use a keyboard to play this activity. Encourage them to use both methods. They will become more familiar with the number keys on the keyboard and be able to distinguish them from the letter keys.

If a child is just beginning to learn to count, help them by counting with them at first. You may simply need to say One and point to one of the items to get them going. Encourage them to point to the items as they count out loud and not to rush, making sure that they have not missed any. If they choose the wrong number, the game will automatically remove some of the numbers. Ask them to count again if they need to, or choose another number. Use the number sequence at the bottom of the screen to count to nine with children, as this will help with visual recognition of the numbers.
